- David Martin Mabee, 63, of Marion, died Wednesday, Jan. 22nd, 2014, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Funeral Services at 10am, Monday Jan. 27th at First Presbyterian Church in Marion, Rev. Beth Hilkerbaumer and Rev. Julie Schuett officiating. Reception following the service. Visitation: 4pm to 7pm, Sunday Jan. 26th, at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion. Private family burial at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. David was born Feb. 17, 1950, in Seymour, the son of Everett and Anna Mabee. In 1968, David graduated from Seymour High School where he played football, ran track, participated in band and was elected student council president. He received a business degree from the University of Iowa in 1973 and pursued a career in business, holding positions at Sears, BT Prime Mover, Hupp Electric and for the past 13 years at Rockwell Collins. He received a Masters Degree in Business Administration in 2006. On Jan. 27, 2001 David was united in marriage to Melanie Fiester in Marion, where they resided throughout the marriage. David was an active and much-loved member of First Presbyterian Church, serving on the Personnel Committee and Associate Pastor Nominating Committee, and teaching middle school Sunday school. A gifted musician since early childhood, David played the piano, accordion, and dulcimer. Only days before he passed, David entertained a group of fellow hospice patients by playing several songs on the grand piano at the Hospice House of Mercy. David traveled extensively; including visits to all 50 continental states and numerous trips to South America and Europe, as well as to the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. In addition, he spent a year living in Haiti. He loved bike riding with his loving wife Melanie, and for the last three years devoted many free hours to overhauling over 150 broken bicycles and donating them to Marion Cares, a local non-profit organization serving underprivileged children. Survivors include his wife, Melanie, of Marion; son Brian (Maria), of Pasadena, CA, and their children Gabriel and Grace; son Tim (Megan), of Davenport, and their children Janessa and Breana; daughter Kimberly McGill, of Walcott and her children Aaliyah and Hayden; son Arthur, of Bettendorf, son Douglas, of Marion; brother Mike, of Bettendorf; sister-in-law Norma, of Chandler AZ; and nieces and nephews.David was preceded in death by his parents and his brother William. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
