  Anecdote	In 1923, Philip Levine and fellow medical student Jennie Mabee published an observation contrary to this idea in the Journal of Immunology and warned that transfusion reactions could occur even with universal donors. During a class demonstration, the two noticed that Mabee's serum hemolyzed Levine's blood, despite the fact that she belonged to group I. This research led to the discovery of the Rh factor of blood with an immune response that destroys red blood cells.
