Mr. Mabie was the youngest of nine children of Elijah and Sarah Hyatt Mabie. The eldest child was Hiram Mabie who died in Peekskill last year.
John, the subject of this sketch was the last one of the nine children.
He was born at Shrub Oak in what is now the Willow Brook house, July 4, 1822 and was consequently in his 80th year. In early life he went to New York and learned the sash and blind trade. After working there he went to Erie Pa., and was there some years. Then he came back to Peekskill and was foreman for Wm. H. Wilcox who conducted a sash and blind factory where Wm Brotherton now is. Later he was in the woodworking department of the Union Stove Works. At that time Mr. Mabie built the little house, now partly a store known as the Bunting house and store on Washington street just below Bay street. He then built the Washington Williams house on Smith street. At that time Mr. Mabie owned a large plot of land there.
Twenty years ago he went to Bayonne where he bas since, lived. He is survived by three children, a daughter; Frank Mabie, who went west to Montana many years ago and Ralph Mabie, of New Rochelle.
