- Meanwhile the inhabitants had learned of the raid, and called a meeting in the house of William Drake at Dover. Thirty-seven men signed the resolutions passed by this meeting. Most of them were enrolled in militia units and 20 were of commissioned or warrant rank. Among the officers were the Lieutenant-Colonels of the 1st Middlesex and 1st Oxford Regiments, Mahlon Burwell of Port Talbot and Henry Bostwick of Dover; all but one or two of the others were from the 1st Norfolk Regiment. It was agreed to attack the raiders and to set guards at once near the mouth of Patterson's Creek. Early the next morning, December 12, there guards arrested Simon Maybee, one of the men who had left Woodhouse in October, 1813, and John G. Harris, who had been recruited during the raid.
Despositions were taken from the two marauders who described how they had pilfered farms in the vicinity of Black Creek while their owners (in one case at least) were attending the meeting at Drake's. Simon Maybee gave a pretty full account of the numbers and movements of the main party, as well as his own. His brother Pinkney told how Simon: "... came into the fuller's shop and solicited him to join him and go down the lake to the party that was there, and that their object was to take way officers that the Militia may be at peace and that they may go to work..."

| Obituary |
26 Jan 1876 [11] |
- Thomas Pinckney Mabee died, at his long residence in the Township of Middleton, on Saturday, the 15th instant in the 87th year of his age, Pinckney Mabee Esq., one of the veterans of the War of 1812-14. The deceased was the youngest son of the late Silas Mabee, he came to this Province with his father, and other members of his family, about the beginning ofthe present century, and when the United States declared war against Great Britain in the year 1812, Pinckney Mabee was amongst those who came forward and volunteered in the Flank Companies, and was put on active duty in defense of the country; he was stationed on the lines during the continuance of that force, and after the Flank Companies were merged into their respective regiments, whenever military duties were required either by the regiment as a body or detachment, or volunteers, Pinckney Mabee was on the alert for duty. He was alwaysregarded with particular favor by the officers of the forces in whichhe served, for the exact performance of his duty, exemplary conduct and bravery; and although often brought in contact with the enemy was so fortunate as to come out each time unscathed. After the war was over he settled on land granted to him by the Government, in the Township of Middleton, where he continued to reside, much respected by all who knew him best, and especially so by those who served with him through the perils of the war. He leaves a numerous and respectable family to mourn the loss of a kind parent.
