- Dr Ruth Mabee Harsha, former organist in Rochester churches and more recently in Brooklyn died yesterday (April 9, 1956) after a long illness at the home of her mother, Mrs George Mabee, 911 Clover St. She had been in Rochester since last January.
Dr Harsha won wide renown as an organist and has been included in "Who's Who Among the Organists of America." and "Who's Who in the East." She has been featured in the leading magazines, including the official magazine of the American Guild of Organists.
She begn her career while in Charlotte High School here, playing the organ in Lakeside Presbyterian Church. She attended the University of Rochester and was graduated from the Eastman School of Music in 1928. For 10 years she was organist at Central Presbyterian Church.
She was a pupil of Harold Gleason, well known Rochester organist, and substituted for him in playing in the house of George Eastman foe a time.
She did post graduate work at School of Sacred Music of Union Theological Seminary, New York City, and studied further with prominent organists in New York City. In 1942 she received the honorary degree of doctor of music from thr New York College of Music.
She was the organist at the Central Methodist Church in Brooklyn for a time and headed the piano department and taught in the theatrical department of the Earnest Wills School of Music in New York City. She also was featured as a piano soloist with the symphonic band and orchestra of the school and played frequently at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Subsequently she took the post with the Sunset Methodist Church in Brooklyn. Her last position was with the Bushwick Avenue Methodist Church, Brooklyn, where she headed five choirs.
She is survived by her mother, three sisters, Miss Gertrude Mabee and Mrs Helen Babcock of Rochester, and Mrs Clarence Smith of Allegany, NY.
Memorial services will be held at 2 pm Wednesday in the Fiske & Hardy Funeral Parlors, 105 Lake Avenue, and on Thursday in the Bushwick Avenue Church, Brooklyn. Burial will be in Argyle, NY

She is survived by a sister, Helen Babcock, dear friend, Dorothy Cooligan, nieces and nephews including Barbara Miller. Gertrude was a Rochester City School District retiree who taught for 21 years at Schools 28, 31, and 11.

- City School District principal and teacher of 43 years died Sept 25 at the age of 88.
Gertrude E Mabee was a principal of 22 years and served as head of schools 28, 31, and 11. She had also been a teacher for 21 years according to Dorothy Cooligan, a fellow principal and friend.
Miss Mabee was a Rochester native who attended School 38 and the former Charlotte High School. She graduated from City Normal School in 1927, obtained a bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester in 1946 and received a master's degree from Colombia University in New York City in 1952, Cooligan said....
Miss Mabee liked to host gatherings at the home she and Cooligan shared and led the Sunday morning coffee at her church, Brighton Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by a sister Helen Babcock of Rochester; niece Barbara Miller of Rochester; and nephew Larry Smith of Allegheny.
