- From email from James Van Dien: The story that I remember is that James Edward and Ferris, our grandfather ( Ferris's namesake and your great-grandfather, Fred) had a falling out and split the operation of the farm for a period of time. This accounts for the fact that there are two barns, the upper and lower barn, and the building of a second house across from the old main farmhouse. This house was later called the tenant house and was rented in the summer by the Dells family and their assorted NY relations and friends for many years. It is the house where I believe the present caretaker/farmer now lives, but it definitely is on and a part of the High Breeze Farm property. Obit in Warwick Advertiser: Ferris E. Barrett, a farmer, died Friday at his home near New Milford. He was born in Vernon Township April 21,1861, a son of James E Barrett and Rachel Cooper. Mr. Barrett is survived by his wife, the former Blanche Mabee; four children, Theo, wife of Herman Day of Bloomingdale, NJ; Leona, wife of Millard Van Dien of Port Jervis, NY, Frances, wife of Wilfred Washer of Ogdensburg, NY and Luther, at home; a sister Mrs. Effie Buchanan of Allendale, NJ and a brother, Seeley of New Milford. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Strong Funeral Home, Rev. Seely Quackenbush officiating. Burial in Warwick Cemetery. There were two outhouses, a single and a three seater that were stationed over the brook. These remained here well into the days that Luther ran the farm. The county health department eventually forced Luther to move them off the brook. Leona Ruth Van Dien Kochenash remembers snakes would hide out in the houses, causing great fright for her. These were mostly black snakes. David Van Dien tells how Ferris Barrett used to take out his dentures(uppers and lowers) and clack them together in his hand, pretending to want to 'eat' his grandchildren. David said the children were frightened by that form of playfulness.
