  Anecdote	Born in England 'in very moderate circumstances' in 1823, George West emigrated to the United States in 1849 at the age of 26. He moved to Ballston Spa in 1860 to be superintendent of a mill in Rock City Falls. By 1880, West was the largest manufacturer of specialty paper bags in the world. In 1899, he sold his interests to the Union Bag & Paper Co. West served in the state Assembly from 1872 to 1876 and served two non-consecutive terms in Congress in the 1880s. He was a philanthropist, contributing half of the cost to build the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ballston Spa (now the United Methodist Church) and donating the pipe organ and other fixtures. His son, George, and son-in-law, Douglass W. Mabee, carried on the business.

  	In the Surrogate's Court of Saratoga county to-day was admitted to probate the will of ex- Congressman George West, who died at Ballston Spa on Sept.20. The estate is valued at $2,250,000, of which $2,000,000 is personal property, the balance consisting of real estate in New York City, Philadelphia, and Saratoga county. Tho beneficiaries under the will are tho testator's son and daughter. George West, Jr., of Ballston Spa and Mrs. Florence L. Mabee, wife of Douglass W. Mabee of Saratoga Springs.
