- Vedder B. Mabee, 47, of Glenville. who took "French leave" from the Rome state custodian school in November was sent back to the institution yesterday. Mabie was taken into custody on July 14 by Deputy Sheriff Edward Smith of Rotterdam after complaints had been made that he was acting queerly and that he had refused to work.
Mabee was first sent to the Rome school July 7, 1931, and at that time it was thought that he was insane. An examination showed, however, that he was merely defective. After he left the school in November he lived In Glenville. A complaint was made against him after he entered the house of Theodore Butler at Reynolds Station without the knowledge of the occupants until he was discovered in the children's room. When found Mabee was hiding under an apple tree about a mile from the Nine Mile bridge.
