12 Oct 2008 [8] |
- John Dale Mabey, 80, of Caldwell, left this earthly life on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, having passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family. A funeral service to honor and celebrate his life will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, at the Karcher Church of the Nazarene, corner of Karcher and Middleton Roads in Nampa. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Caldwell. John was born on June 19, 1928, in Harper County, Oklah., the son of Edgar and Bertha (McGuire) Mabey. He was one of nine children, having three older sisters, (Helen, Marian & Dorothy) and three younger (Carol, Alice and Pat), and two younger brothers, (Harry and Dick). John grew up in Oklahoma, moving to Idaho for a short while in 1945, and for good in 1947. He attended school in Fort Supply, Oklah., and Franklin High School in Boise, graduating from Fort Supply High School in 1947. He drove a school bus in Kuna where he met Bonnie Marshall and they were married in 1950. They had six children and were married for almost 33 years when Bonnie passed away in August of 1984. John worked for over 50 years in various seed businesses in Canyon County, retiring from Rogers Brothers' Seed Company. He spent his summer "vacations" in Kansas working the wheat harvest. John always loved the wheat fields, and never tired of sitting atop a combine in the Kansas heat. He was an active member of the Nampa First Christian Church, where he raised his children. He later joined the Karcher Church of the Nazarene where he was active until his death. John met Cassilee Smart and they were married in June of 1987. They spent more than 20 years together, joining their families and loving each other. To his big family, John added Cass' three sons and their families, making a total of nine children: John Mabey, Jr. (Susan) Vale, Oreg.; Michael Mabey (Donna), Spokane, Wash.; Gerald Mabey (Teresa), Nampa; Susan Wilkerson (Tim), Hermiston, Oreg.; Mary Ingram (Damon), Nampa; Martin Mabey (Theresa), Anacortes, Wash.; Kenneth Smart (Pam), Caldwell; James Smart (Donna), Auburn, Wash.; and Gerald Smart, Paso Robles, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Marian Crossland, Dorothy Omerod, Pat Berry, and Carol Borgens and a brother, Richard "Dick" Mabey.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cassilee; 6 children and their spouses, 13 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 3 step sons, 7 step grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren, 2 sisters and a brother. John never met a child he couldn't love, tickle, tease, or giggle with. He loved to hold small ones close, and was always willing to give hugs and smiles. He had an infectious giggle, a love of old music (Lawrence Welk being one of his favorites), and was always proud of his family. He had a special fondness for babies, and could hold any small infant indefinitely. He never tired of having little ones around, and would welcome visits from the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Even in the last few years, when he wasn't feeling 100 percent, he would never turn down a chance to see one of his grandchildren. Daddy, we are so proud to be your children. We are so thankful for the lessons you taught us. And we are glad you are walking in the wheat fields once again. Take a deep breath, and smile. We love you.
