- Married 73 Years Mr. & Mrs. Maybee Mark Anniversary
Prince Edward County's Oldest Couple Recall Pioneer Days
Picton March 13 - Prince Edward county's oldest couple, who probably have more wedded years to their credit than any known couple in the Dominion of Canada, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Addison Maybee of Bloomfiled, will celebrate their seventy-third wedding anniversary at heir home Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Maybee are enjoying good health. Mrs. Maybee celebrated her ninety-first birthday on Jan. 20, and her husband is now in his ninety-fourth year. They live in a frame house on what is termed the "short cut" to West Lake, and the housekeeping is efficiently carried on by Mrs. Maybee, while her husband looks after the woodpile and the garden in summer.
Possessing a keen sense of humor and being a shrewd observer of people, Mr. Maybee believes that the average individual does not enjoy life as much in the rush of modern times as they did in the early days. Commercially the world has benefitted, but much of the social significance of life has been lost he thinks. He believes that the radio is one of the greatest services ever developed for education and entertainment, and sees it as a service to the development of thought and Christianity.
Mrs. Maybee before her marriage, was Elizabeth A. Huycke, daughter of Isaac Huycke and Jane Miller, who was a sister of Rev. Gilbert Miller, former Methodist Church minister at Cherry Valley. There were twelve children in the Miller family, and all were living when the youngest was twenty-one. This in itself is something unusual Mrs. Maybee was born on her father's farm at Point Petre on Jan. 20, 1845.
Peter Addison Maybee was born in Athol Township on Oct. 22 1842. His grandfather, Peter Maybee was a United Empire Loyalist and settled in Prince Edward County.
Mr. Maybee was in business in New York at the time of the Civil War, returning to Canada when disorder began, and settling first in Newburg and then Odessa, where he farmed and conducted a general store. a few years ago he sold the business and came to live in Prince Edward County.
Mr. and Mrs Maybee have been active in all social and church work in the in which they have resided. He was Recording Steward in the Odessa Methodist Church for nearly fifty years and President of the Ernestown Township Sunday School association for two years. He served as a Trustee of the Odessa Continuation School for nearly twenty years and was Clerk of the Township of Ernestown for eighteen years. He was a member of the Odessa Masonic Lodge and served as Master of it.
Although his family for years has been known as Conservative, Mr. Maybee confessed that he might be called "a staunch liberal". He claims he always tried to support the policy that was in his opinion best for the country. He has kept posted on world affairs and has been a reader of the The Globe since boyhood.
Mr. & Mrs. Maybee have one son, S. Maybee, who is in business in Williamsport Pa. He is 71, and has two children living, Raymond and Clarence, both of Williamsport. Mrs. Maybee is the last of her famly, but Mr. Maybee has one sister, Mrs. Cummings, who lives about fourteen miles from Belleville in Hastings County. They are the only survivors of ten children.
The couple plan to spend their anniversary quietly at heir home. Last year they received scores of congratulatory messages from all over Canada and the United States. The outstanding greeting of course was that of the late King George V.

- Parents of I. S. Mabee, of 827 First Avenue, this city, Mr. And Mrs. Peter A. Mabee, of Picton, Ontario, Canada, will tomorrow celebrate their seventy-forth wedding anniversary. They were married March 15, 1863. Both Mr. And Mrs. Mabee are in good health, and perform their daily tasks about their home in Picton. Mr. Mabee was 94 years old last October, and Mrs. Mabee was 92, Jan 20, Last summer, Mr. Mabee tended his own garden, and when their son was their guest Mrs. Mabee herself prepared the dinner which celebrated the occasion. In spite of their advanced years, Mr. Mabee , who is their only child, hears from his parents regularly. He had hoped to visit them on their wedding anniversary, but because of the ill health of his wife has been forced to postpone the trip to a later date. The couple will observe their anniversary at their home, receiving the congratulations of their many friends in the entire area.

- MR. AND MRS. P.A. MABEE
"Canada's longest married couple, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Addison Mabee are looking forward to celebrating the 76th anniversary of their wedding on Wednesday, March 15.
No special celebration is planned, though it is expected many friends, will as in the past, send messages of congratulations and good wishes or gifts. These bring much happiness to the aged couple.
Yesterday, Mrs. D. Peters, who is staying with Mr. and Mrs. Mabee, told The Gazette that Mr. Mabee is active and up each day but that Mrs. Mabee was not so well and usually got up only for meals. She is 94 and Mr. Mabee is 96
They have not heard if their son, Stanley, of Williamsport, Pennsylvania expects to come and visit them on the occasion of their anniversary. He is 74 and visited last summer.
Mr. and Mrs. Mabee have lived during the reign of five British Sovereigns, Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, George V, King Edward VIII, George VI. Mr. Mabee was born six years after Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837."
Mrs. and Mrs. Mabee's anniversary will be featured in newspapers in Canada and the United States and a number of men prominent in public life are expected to send congratulatory messages."
