- It reported that Earl Stewart Mabey, 78, a retired broadcast technician, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, in Fort Worth.
Earl Stewart Mabey was born April 1, 1923, to Hervey and Florence Mabey in Wellesley, Mass. He attended Wellesley High School before joining the Army Air Force in 1942, where he trained as an airplane mechanic. He also served his country as a ground control radio operator. He received his honorable discharge at Carswell Air Force Base in 1948, and immediately joined WBAP AM/FM/TV as a broadcast technician.
During his 39 years at WBAP (Channel 5), he saw great changes in the television industry and was instrumental in broadcasting the news on such historic events as the 1949 flood in Fort Worth, President Kennedy's visit to Fort Worth, his assassination and the shooting of Lee Harvey Oswald.
He had been a very active member of Meadowbrook United Methodist Church since 1956. He had many roles at Meadowbrook. He was the president of the Bright Corner Sunday School Class, but his principle role and joy was as the church's sound technician.
He served on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center from 1992 to 1997. Since 1993, he was an active member of Code Blue (a neighborhood patrol) and a volunteer with Tarrant County Harvest.
Survivors: Loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Jeanne Mabey; 2 sons; 2 daughters; 8 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
