- New York, Aug 6 – Lionel C. Mabey, 103-year-old sailor who was born aboard ship and spent nearly three-quarters of a century at sea, died yesterday at Sailors' Snug Harbor, Staten Island.
Records at the institition, a home for retired merchant seaman, indicated Mr Mabey was born May 6, 1854, on the American ship John Bunyan as it entered Boston Harbor. His father, Robert Fren Mabey, was captain of the vessel, described only as a three masted ship.
Residents at the home said Mr Mabey had told them he spent most of his youth aboard the John Bunyan. He made his first voyage as an apprentice seaman in February 1877.
[This is based on the exaggerated story told as old man in the rest home. The Prince Edward Island, Baptism Index, 1788-1943 has him born 6 May 1866, and baptized 19 Jul 1866 on Prince Edward Island, Canada; where his father Robert C. Mabey, was born and raised, and married.]
