- Secord, James (son of Daniel and Catherine (Mabie) Secord), born at New Rochelle, New York on 24 Apr 1732 and baptized at the New Rochelle Reformed Dutch Church on 28 May 1732,1 died at Niagara Twp., Lincoln Co., Upper Canada before 3 Aug 1795. He married Magdelina Badeau, born at New Rochelle, New York c. 1739.
James was baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church at New Rochelle as "Jacques" on 28 Mar 1732. The witnesses were Mr. Johanes Maby and Mad. Susan his wife.
Following his marriage to Magdeline Badeau, James lived at New Rochelle for a time and had two children baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church: Salomon (Solomon), born on
9 Mar 1755 and baptized on 4 Apr 1755, and Etienne (Stephen), baptized on 9 Oct 1757.
In the years prior to the American Revolution, they resided at Walpack, Sussex County, New Jersey where James Secord was listed on the Tax Rateables List of 1773-74. He afterwards moved to the Susquehanna Valley, Pennsylvania. During the American Revolution, James was loyal to the British cause and he was a Lieutenant in Butler's Rangers.
In the Land Petition dated 3 Aug 1795 filed by his sons, James and David Secord, it was noted that James Secord, Sr., deceased, joined His Majesty's Standard as early as the year 1777 and brought with him forty-six loyal subjects to Niagara. In the year following, he brought his family consisting of a wife and seven children, three of whom joined Col. Butler's Rangers and served during the War. James, Sr. served as a Lieutenant in the Six Nations Indian Department. He received 500 acres of land and his heirs wished his further entitlement. They were granted an additional 1,500 acres to bring his entitlement to 2,000 acres.3
In his land petition dated at Niagara on 12 Jan 1797, James Secord, Jr. noted that his father brought into this province about forty men, all of whom joined Col. Butler's Rangers. He was promised a Company in the Rangers but this was afterwards withheld from him.4
James and Magdeline Secord and their family were recorded in the 1783 Census of Niagara. They afterwards settled in Niagara Twp., Lincoln Co.
James received a grant of the north half of Lot 19, Concession 2, Charlotteville Twp., Norfolk Co. in the Long Point Settlement. This was willed to his sons David and James Secord.5
