Anecdote |
- Irene Thelma was born March 10, 1916 in Granton, WI. She went to Hylandale Academy where she was the only girl in her graduating class. She went to Greenville, TN to nurses training. I do not know where and when she met Clif but she was sweet on him during nurses training. Dating and marriage during nursing school was not allowed back then. After she developed a severe kidney infection and missed too many classes she dropped out of the nursing program and married him. She was married to Clifton Eric Clark Jr. June 1, 1943, in Knoxville, Tennessee, by Pastor O. D. Cardey. Two children were born to Irene and Clif. Terry James was born November 11, 1946, at Madison College, Tennessee, and Dixie Lee was born September 27, 1954 at Reedsburg, Wisconsin. The folks built a house in Reedsburg but then felt that they should move out west. They prayed about this and vowed that if the house would sell that they would send their kids to Adventist schools. The house sold quickly and the woman that bought it said later that she did not know why she bought the place. But my folks knew why. And they were true to their vow. Terry and I were sent in SDA schools. It was difficult since there was only one income. We did not have any extras growing up. Mom shopped at 2nd hand stores as much as she could. We didn't go to Jr camp, I didn't even think to ask. Money was tight. Irene was primarily a wife and mother with no professional training. Irene and Clif lived in quite a few places. The longest they lived in one place was in the 1960's when they were in Redding, CA area. During our time there the folks took in 2 foster daughters, Mary Ann and Donna Rae Peterson. It was also here that Irene took in some laundry/ ironing to bring in some extra cash. Irene remembered those days as the best time of her life. They also lived in Montrose, CO for a few years during the '70's. Irene was a nanny to 2 girls while they were living there and they became like part of her family. Clif retired there and they moved to be near Terry and his family near Longview, WA. After Clif's death Irene continued to live in the Longview area and had many friends there. Irene died December 12, 1997 from complications of pulmonary fibrosis.
Clifton Eric Clark Jr. was born August 19, 1915 in Hutchinson, Kansas. When he was 13 his mother (Violet Barnhurst Clark) died of Bright's Disease (a kidney disease). Clif's father (Clifton Eric Clark Sr) left him, his younger brother Elwood and his sister Fonda at an orphanage run by his grandparents (John William Barnhurst and Margaret Muir Barnhurst) near Tulsa, Oklahoma. Clif served as a medic in the army during WW2. He trained as a medical technologist and that was his profession the rest of his life. He loved electronics and "high fi" equipment. He had a large stereo system with a reel to reel tape deck etc. I remember mom fussing about all the cords that led to said equipment. He played a lot of classical music. Dad was an eccentric man that few understood. Mom was asked one time that I know of "How do you get along with him Irene?" He lacked tact and that got him into trouble on more than one occasion. He was an avid gardener with a green thumb. We subscribed to Organic Gardening magazines and he grew prize winning veggies. I remember that I could always count on dad to fix anything. I remember an incident when I was living in Arkansas. Mom and dad came to visit. The black walnuts were ready to harvest. He devised a way to get the hulls off that most people would not have thought of. He made a trough as wide as a car tire and with the tire spinning in the trough he would pour the black walnuts in and they came out the other side perfectly hulled. Then he would sit for hours with pliers and picks getting those nuts out better than I have ever seen anyone do. He was amazing. He died August 27, 1985 of Lou Gehrigs disease.
