H. James Hire, 72, of Mansfield died unexpectedly, early Thursday morning, July 11, 2002 at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital. Mr. Hire was born September 14, 1929 in Lorain, Ohio and was a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1948 and from Purdue University in 1952 with a degree in electrical engineering. Mr. Hire was affiliated with and retired from the Hi-Stat Manufacturing Company and was also affiliated with the Johnny Appleseed Broadcasting Company, otherwise known as WVNO. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was a lifelong supporter of the Boy Scouts of America having received its Silver Beaver Award. Jim, whose call letters were W8ZET, was passionate about international ham radio, was a recipient of the 300 Club Award, was associated with NODX and was a life member, honored by the American Radio Relay League with the DXCC honor roll award. He was also a longtime board member and current Chairman of the Board of the Mansfield Metropolitan Housing Association. Jim was also a member of Sertoma Club. Jim is survived by his wife, Janeen (Houston) Hire; daughter and son-in-law, Christine and David M. Schwein of Columbus; son and daughter-in-law, John and Debora Hire of Mansfield; stepson and his wife, Rusty and Karen Mabee of Lawrenceville, Ga.; stepdaughter, Jennifer Mabee Bookwalter of Findlay, Ohio; six grandchildren, Matthew Schwein, Jessica Hire, Jordann Hire, Kaitlin Mabee, Megan Mabee and Tori Bookwalter; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Roy Stott of Virginia Beach, Va.; twin brother Jack and his wife, Phyllis Hire of Boca Grande, Fla.; nieces and nephews, Catherine and Richard Belt and Betsy and James Hire, all of Mansfield, Jane Hire Jones of Aspen, Co. as well as their children, and his mother-in-law, Naomi Houston of Mansfield. Friends may call at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, Sunday, July 14 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 399 So. Trimble Road, Mansfield, Ohio, with additional calling hours one hour prior to funeral services. Rev. Dennis Allison will conduct services and burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
