Cuba, New York [10] |
- Mrs. Sarah Mabey Wood, wife of the late Halsey S. Wood, passed away at her home in Abbotts, Friday, July 1, at 12:30 a. m. Mrs. Wood was one of a family of seven children. Of these George, John and William Mabey survive their sister—one brother, Samuel of Ithaca and two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Vincent) and Lucy (Mrs. Hicks) having preceded her in death.
Mrs. Wood was born near Ithaca, Nov. 25, 1843. In young womanhood she came with her parents into this community where, with the exception of four years in her early married life spent in Bradford, Pa., she passed the remainder of her life.
On April 28, 1863 she vas married to Halsey S. Wood, who died Oct. 11, 1906. Their home was blessed with one daughter, Belle, now Mrs. Linus French of Cuba, and a foster son, George Wood, whom they took at the age of 20 months.
Her love for her family, her life consecration, not only to their happiness but others', remain sweet and tender in the hearts of those who knew her best. Blessed as she was with a unique understanding of young people, her kindly interest and love for them won her a telling influence in their lives. Devoted to her church-she used her every effort to promote its maintenance and progress in its various departments of work. Had she left no inheritance other tan the memory of her devotion to truth and right, and to her God, her loved ones would have been rich indeed.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Abbotts church, Rev. F. L. Harburn of Cuba officiating.
The precious word of our Master. "I go to prepare a place for you, that where I am; there ye may be also," formed the central theme of the sermon. The pallbearers were eight nephews, Ray, Paul, Mac .and Ross Mabey, Charles Fuller, Harry White, Dunne Burch and Clarence Willis. The flower bearers were Genevieve and Marvel White, Isabel White and Nellie Roat, The burial was at the Abbotts cemetery.
