- S. Kirk Wheeler, 86, a longtime resident of Signal Mountain, TN, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, October 2, 2012.
S. Kirk Wheeler devoted his life to education and in service to his nation and others. He was the principal at Thrasher Elementary School for 23 years and retired in 1993. Prior to Thrasher, he was principal at Signal Mountain Elementary School for nine years, assistant principal at Normal Park, and taught at Unionville, TN and Shelbyville, TN.
Solon Kirk Wheeler was born in Unionville, TN, the son of the late Solon D. and Elizabeth Wheeler.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, W. T. and Woodson Wheeler.
He was a veteran having enlisted in the United States Navy at age 16, completed boot camp in San Diego and served on Midway Island in World War II from ages 17 - 19. Serving in the regular Navy and the Naval Reserves for 43½ years, he was proud to be a World War II veteran and devoted to serving his country. Kirk gave 300 Sea Power presentations to groups and also the students at Thrasher.
Kirk was devoted to his family and is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Carolyn Mabee Wheeler, of Signal Mountain, TN; three daughters, Pam (Mike) Thomas, of Ooltewah, TN, Sharon Wheeler, of Montgomery, AL, and Teresa (Greg) Tinney, of Atlanta, GA; and grandchildren, Taylor Thomas, of Ooltewah, TN, Wheeler Tinney and Sky Tinney, of Atlanta, GA.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
