  	29 Dec 1989, The Times Colonist (Victoria, BC CAMPBELL -- Harold Lane, BA, M.Ed., LL.D., peacefully December 27, 1989 in his 98th year. Born July 21, 1892 in Portland, Oregon of Canadian parents, he came to Victoria in 1895. Predeceased by May, his beloved wife of almost 62 years, in 1981; his elder son, John, in 1951 and granddaughter, Kathy in 1973. Survived by his son, Peter of Pender Island; brother, Claude of Gabriola Island; grandson, John of Victoria; granddaughters, Carol Brown of Los Angeles, Victoria Blattman of Ottawa, Barbara Scheck of Whitehorse and five great-grandchildren. Dr. Campbell's career in Education spanned 51 years and was interrupted only by service in France in the First World War. Beginning as a teacher in a one-room school in 1910, he served the Province of British Columbia in a variety of teaching and administrative positions, retiring in 1958 as Deputy Minister and Superintendent of Education. Subsequently he was appointed Director of Education, Department of National Defense Schools in Europe until 1961. Dr. Campbell was the author of several school text books, president of the Canadian Education Association, a recipient of the Althouse Memorial Award for Leadership in Canadian Education and the Quance Lectureship in Canadian Education. A Service of Remembrance will be held Friday, January 5, 1989 at 2:00 p.m. at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel. Private interment preceeding the service.
