Navarre Beach, Santa Rosa County, Florida [4] |
- A Louisiana man died in an area hospital after being swept out into the Gulf of Mexico off Navarre Beach on Monday.
Roderick M. Maybee, 65, of Baton Rouge, La., was swimming in the Gulf in front of the Navarre Towers when he was carried out into the water, likely by a rip current, according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office.
Lifeguard and fire responders were able to recover Maybee from the waves and began performing CPR.
At 2:30 p.m., sheriff's deputies blocked off traffic so a Lifeflight helicopter could airlift Maybee to an area hospital. Maybee was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The family was at Navarre Beach vacationing, according to the sheriff's office.
Conditions were rough, and red flags flew Monday in Navarre.
