- Gladys Marie Maybee was ushered into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, July 3, 2022 surrounded by family. Gladys was the 6 th child born to Edward and Etta (Carpenter) Bolling on February 16 th , 1930 in Taneyville, Missouri. At the age of 6 her parents loaded her up, along with her 7 siblings and grandpa Joe, into a covered Ford truck and made their way out west to Port Angeles, Washington. For the entire trip they subsisted mainly on peanut butter which Gladys commonly joked about not liking for the rest of her life. After a brief stay on Blue Mountain, her family eventually settled further west in Eden Valley. Gladys attended Fairview Elementary (now Olympic Christian School) as a youngster and then graduated from Roosevelt High School in Port Angeles before marrying the love of her life, Edwin Hartley Maybee, on June 19 th , 1948.
In 1955, along with their daughters Victoria and Jaqueline, Ed and Gladys relocated to Crescent City, California where they had purchased shares in a plywood mill. While living there, they had two more daughters, Jane and Lesa. In 1960 the family moved back to Port Angeles where Ed and Gladys established the first coin-operated laundromat and dry clean business located next to Link's Humdinger. In 1974 they moved their business to Front and Chambers where it became known as Maybee's Village. Maybee's Village included a deli, dry-cleaner, coin-op laundry, gas station and popcorn house. With Gladys at the helm in the deli, it quickly became the local's favorite spot for lunch and was known for its fantastic fried chicken, cleverly cut and fried potato wedges called "spuddos," assorted deli salads, and perhaps the most popular of all, Gladys's chocolate chip cookies. You could hardly even go there without having one.
With a steady stream of service-oriented jobs including Tenny's, Link's Humdinger and their owner operated Maybee's Village, Gladys became known for her charming nature and extraordinary hospitality. Feisty and friendly, she was never short of work and was always extremely dutiful in her endeavors. Her and Ed spent many extra hours on top of their loaded workdays catering for weddings, the Coast Guard, the hospital, the local mills and many other places of business. Their Christmas baskets, party trays and Gladys's chocolate chip cookies were well-known and enjoyed by many. Eventually retirement came to them in 1989 but in reality, Gladys never really retired from hospitality. She truly had a knack for gathering and feeding people, even outside of her business affairs. With 4 daughters, 15 grandchildren plus greats and great-greats, Gladys could cook for an army and often did. Her and Ed's home in Fairview known as 'the farm' became the space where countless family gatherings would occur over the years - holidays, birthdays and even on normal days too - you could always expect to leave with your heart full and your tummy even fuller.
Throughout her life, Gladys was at ease with people. Loved and liked by most who knew her, she was a big personality in a small package and there was no question that she was in charge. Born with a servant's heart and a dutiful nature, Gladys was the woman for the job of life. She lived and loved well and to be in her presence was to feel at home, taken care of. She left this earthly plane after a long and meaningful life where she literally was the creator of memories for so many, for so long. She will be dearly missed.
Gladys was laid in her final resting spot next to her husband on Wednesday, July 13 th at Mount Angeles Cemetery.
Gladys is survived by her four daughters, Vicki (Bruce) Shamp, Jacki (Ed) Kitselman, Jane (Jerry) Jacobs and Lesa (Curt) Oppelt. There are 15 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her infant daughter Susan Marie, loving husband Ed, parents, brothers David and Harvey Bolling, and sisters Alma (Clifford) Maybee, Hazel (George) Tarr, Audrey (George) Thompson, Neva (Morgan) Fowles, and Nadine (Richard) Gilden).
