- William Oakley Mabie served with Company E of the 27th Michigan Infantry, which was assigned to the 9th Corps, commanded by General Ambrose Burnside. His service took him through some of the bloodiest battles of the war, participating in the battles of Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse (the Bloody Angle), Cold Harbor, Bethesda Church. At Petersburg he was wounded at the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864. A Minnie ball entered his right thigh, passed through and entered his left leg, exiting just above his left knee. He was discharged as disabled
