18 Aug 1914 [1] |
- The following notice of the death of Mrs Charles Mabie, taken from a paper published at Roswell, New Mexico, will be of interest to her friends here. She at one time lived in Belvidere and was a cousin of the late Alonzo Marean, also being related to the Caswell, Whitney, and Rowan families
Roswell, New Mexico. – Brief funeral services were held this afternoon at 4 o'clock for the late Mrs Charles Mabie, whose death occurred yesterday. Services were at the home of the son, J. L. Mabie, 113 North Kentucky avenue, at the hour of sunset yesterday, July 26.
From an old family record we read: "Elmira Congdon was born December 8th, in the year of our lord 1833, in the town of Union, Broome county, N. Y." Charles Mabie was also a native of New York. They were married February 27, 1853, at Belvidere, Boone county, Ill. Two children were born to them: Ida Louise and Jay Lewis. The daughter, Mrs F. L. Warren, now lives in Grant's Pass, Oregon, while the other child, J. L. Mabie, is our esteemed citizen of the Mabie-Lowery Hardware company.
Mr and Mrs Charles Mabie experienced a life-time of united happiness, passing the milestone that marks the golden wedding anniversary. This was celebrated in Independence, Iowa, in 1903, as a delightful suprise to the old people.
Charles Mabie died at his home in Independence, Iowa, June 11, 1904, aged 75 years. It will be at his side in the family lot that dear Grandma Mabie will find her last resting place. The influence of her whole life of more than eighty years, was expressed in the last sentence she ever uttered – a simple trusting prayer to her Savior.
Most of her life was spent in Illinois and Iowa. In 1863 the young couple moved to Fredericksburg, Ia. And later moved to Independence. In 1908 she accompanied her son to New Mexico and has been a resident of our city since that time.
The large circle of her friends, especially amoung her own church people, are sad today because of the thought that no more will we see the calm, happy countenance of this beautiful character. The adult Bible class of the Baptist Church will miss the sight of the two old ladies, Mrs Goodsell and Mrs Mabie, sitting together listening to the lesson explanation as given by Dr. Goodsell.
