Mr. Mabie was born in the town of Grove, Dec 23, 1840, and served as a private in Co. F 24th Regt, Michigan Infantry during the Civil war. Since this time he has conducted a photograph gallery on East Main up till failing health, a short time ago made it necessary for him to retire. The funeral was held at the home on East Main Street last Wednesday afternoon.15 |

About 4 o'clock last Monday afternoon, surrounded by his wife and children and friends and acquaintances, he breathed his last. Conscious to the finish, a moment before the vital spark went out, he predicted that the end was near. Death resulted from heart failure, superinduced by the grip and old age. He had been confined to the house several weeks before his death, although it was not until the last week that his illness became serious. Then his illness assumed such an alarming condition that his children were summoned. The funeral occurred from the Presbyterian at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Rev. John Sinclair officiating. A large number of the friends and acquaintance of the deceased attended the funeral and followed the remains to their last resting place. Ezra Truesdell was born in Warsaw, New York, he being one of a family of six, five boys and one girls. He came from revolutionary stock, his grandfather on the mother's side having been a drum major in Ethan Allen's brigade in the revolutionary war. His father fought against England in the war of 1812, and his oldest brother was in the Mexican war. Ezra Truesdell was born in 1813. During his early years he attended school but soon left the farm to learn the carpenter trade. When but 17 years of age he assisted in the construction of the celebrated bridge at Portage, New York. Shortly afterwards he came to Medina county, Ohio, where he meet Miss Rachel Mabie with whom he soon engaged to wed. The Ohio marriage laws preventing they crossed over to Pennsylvania and were married, going from there to the old home in New York, where they lived two years, and then returned to Median county, Ohio, where Mr. Truesdell remained for sixteen years, working at farming and carpenter work. In the spring of 1859 he came to Cannon Falls, Minn., where he purchased a farm, which he disposed of in 1865. He spent the next three years in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota and came here with his family in 1869. He came up on one of the first steamboats that plied the waters of Minnesota. Mr Truesdell purchased what is now the Miller farm just east of the city, and lived on that and in the city at intervals until 1869. He also ran a feed and flour store in this city, but at the time of his death was unable to do heavy work. He leaves a wife and eight children, He was the father of thirteen children, three of which fought for the Union in the civil war. Gilbert, Lafayette and Sylvester, the former giving his life for the cause. His brother Gideon Truesdell, built the first six miles of railroad ever built in Wisconsin and was a member of the Wisconsin legislature. Another brother, Levi Truesdell opened the first salt well in Michigan. Mr. Truesdell was firm in his ideas. He loved and cherished Republicanism. Born in its cradle, he afterwards become one of the its nurses. He. too, was a honest man, and no one can say that he wilfully wronged them. He had his enemies while alive, but in death even they will not withhold the praises to which he is entitled.5 |

Old age was the principal cause, the deceased being nearly 83 years old at the time of her death. Mrs Truesdell was up and doing housework 3 weeks ago. At that time she was weakening and a slight cold forced her to take to the bed. From the bed she never arose and gradually grew weaker until the end came last Friday. The funeral occurred from the residence at 2 o'clock last Sat. afternoon, Rev John Sinclair of the Presbyterian Church officiating. The interment occurred in the Redwood Cemetery and it, as well as the funeral, was attended by a large number of friends and acquaintances of the family. The deceased was born in New York State. She was married at the age of 21 to Ezra Truesdell, a late well-known fellow townsman. The two resided in Pennsylvania for a time and then moved west to Ohio where they resided until 1855, when they came to Minnesota, settling in Goodhue County. Here they resided until 1869 when they came to Redwood County, settling on the farm one mile east of the city. They resided there for a number of years after which they moved in town and resided where death occurred ever since. She was the mother of 9 boys and 4 girls, 13 children in all, of which nine are still living, five boys and four girls. While not generally known, on account of her preferred retirement, she was warmly attached to her children and preferred the domestic to the social life.7 |
