Marr-non* | circa 1881 | He and Katie Nevis had children together without formal marriage circa 1881. |
(Witness) oObit | 20 June 1883 | Leonard Snethen Mabee was mentioned in the obituary of Katie Nevis on 20 June 1883 at New York City, New York; Miss Katie Nevis many years ago achieved the name of champion lady skater in Brooklyn. She was a frequent visitor at the rink. She married, and about five years ago her husband died. She returned to the house of her father, a retired butcher, but was not a constant resident. Two years ago she went away from her father's house with Leonard Mabie. a good-looking drug clerk, who was earning a fair living, but who was addicted to the use of liquor. He finally lost his place. Neighbors of the couple in Brooklyn say that in his taste for liquor he was matched by her, and, further, that both were victims of the opium habit Last Thursday Leonard ran from the house, 175 Jay street. Brooklyn, where he had furnished rooms, for a physician, and when he found one he endeavored, in his excitement. to drag him home with him. He said his wife bad taken an overdose of opium. The woman died without being able to speak; and when Dr. Horniston announced that she was dead. Mr. Leonard picked up his hat and said in a hollow voice "I am going to go where she is." Those who heard him got the impression that he intended to commit suicide, but the next day a lady in the Jay street house received a note from him. In which he said be was in the Long Island College Hospital, broken down in mind end body. and begged her to see that his wife was properly buried. He said he had no money, but that he would reimburse her if he ever had any. He did not return to the house, and when the Coroner searched for him because he wanted his testimony at the inquest. it was learned that he had not been al the Long Island College Hospital at all. He has not been heard of by his friends since he left the side of the dead woman. No one was present but he when she took the fatal dose but there is little suspicion that it was not self-administered. The jury gave a verdict in accordance with the facts as related without indicating any suspicions, although his testimony was especially desired. The woman's parents took the body to their home and buried it in Greenwood. The day she died. Mabie borrowed $2 from Mr. Tompkins, his landlord, saying that he would use it in telegraphing to her father. He did not do so. Mr. Tompkins says both husband and wife were dissipated, and would frequently lock themselves in their room for days at a time while they went on a spree. They had not paid their rent since entering the house.13 |
Anecdote* | 21 June 1883 | Leonard Mabie, who left the house No. 176 Jay-street, Brooklyn, on the death of his wife, on Thursday last, called at the house on Tuesday night. He was under the influence of liquor, and soon left, saying he was going to commit suicide. Yesterday morning James Clare, of No. 383 Jay-street, found in Willoughby street a red wallet containing papers and a powder supposed to be morphine. He took the papers to the First Precinct Station-house, where, from the address on some of them, the wallet was supposed to be the property of Mabie. In the wallet was a letter from Mabie to his wife proposing a separation, and a reply from her agreeing to his terms. Both were addicted to drink.14 |
