Loving husband of Helen (nee McDermott). Much loved father (and father-in-law) of Kim (John) Twohig of Mississauga, ON., Jill (Tim) Peacock of Rossland, BC, and Sarah (Phil) Crowe of Sydney, Australia. Grandfather of Connor and Patrick Twohig, Stephanie, Clare and David Peacock, Alex, Murray, Dexter and Vivienne Crowe. Brother of the late Dorothy M. Douglas, Winifred R. Gray and John R. Maybee. Lieutenant in the Signal Corps during WWII. Graduate of Trinity College, University of Toronto, 1948. Arthur was an avid canoeist, skier, golfer and outdoorsman. He was unfailingly optimistic, kind and considerate. Arthur loved his family unconditionally, served his country and community faithfully and accepted life's challenges with dignity. He earned the respect and affection of all who knew him. His love of music and sense of humour endured until his last hours and endeared him to those who knew him through his illness. The family wishes to thank the staff at Castleview Care Centre for their wonderful care, compassion and friendship. Cremation has taken place and Arthur's life has been celebrated as he would have wished. In memory of Arthur, please do something, however small, to make the world a better place.7
oObit6 April 2010  On 6 April 2010 the obituary of Arthur Ryerson Maybee read: Arthur Ryerson Maybee, outdoorsman, music lover, philanthropist, ski patroller, soldier, trailblazer, devoted husband, father, grandfather. Born April 15, 1923, in Calgary. Died Dec. 27, 2009, in Castlegar, B.C., of complications from Alzheimer's disease, aged 86.
Arthur loved to be outdoors. He was happiest when paddling, skiing, landscaping, golfing, bicycling or hiking.
When he was 60, he set out on a wilderness trip in Newfoundland with his middle daughter, Jill. The owner of the canoe they had borrowed assured them that with the exception of a few simple portages, the river they were planning to paddle was easily navigable. A day into their trip, Arthur and Jill encountered a series of large waterfalls. There was no portage trail to be found.
Jill later confessed that she was quite worried. Arthur, however, was his usual self – optimistic, focused and decisive. Although not familiar with the area, he used his compass and assured Jill that if they followed a certain course they would eventually find hydro wires and then a road. He was right, and after a considerable hike, they both returned safely to civilization.
While he rarely discussed his wartime service, his experience during the Second World War probably helped to save his life during this Newfoundland adventure. At 18, Arthur joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He rose to the rank of lieutenant and saw action in Belgium and the Netherlands. In the 1950s, he honed his survival skills when he paddled the route of the voyageurs with a small group of avid canoeists.
Arthur's childhood was spent in Calgary. His family moved to the Toronto area as Arthur entered high school, and later to Oakville, Ont.
Following his wartime service, Arthur graduated with his BA from the University of Toronto and briefly worked with the United Nations and Carleton University. He then settled into development work, focusing on fundraising for numerous educational institutions, hospitals, cultural and community organizations. Arthur exuded sincerity and a casual charm that allowed him to succeed in his chosen field.
Early in his career, Arthur met Helen McDermott while commuting from Oakville to Toronto. They married in 1951 and had three daughters, Kim, Jill and Sarah, and eventually nine grandchildren.
In his spare time, Arthur was a volunteer with the Canadian Ski Patrol, a founding member of the Canadian Ski Council and helped establish the Trans Canada Trail in New Brunswick, where he and Helen lived for a number of years.
In 1988, Arthur retired. He and Helen moved from New Brunswick to Florida and in 1995 to Collingwood, Ont.
Despite the challenges of his final years Arthur never lost that spark of optimism, a ready smile and the gentle nature that drew people to him.2

oObit*10 October 1912  On 10 October 1912 at Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, the obituary of Eleanor Ryerson Maybee read: A SAD LOSS. The home of one of Brandon's best known citizens was overshadowed in the twilight of Saturday evening, when Eleanor, the smiling, prattling little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Maybee, 630 Sixteenth street, was taken from their love and embrace. Suddenly stricken for some four or five days the spirit of the child hovered on the brink of death, and notwithstanding the best medical attendance available, her condition grew weaker and on Saturday she gradually sank, like as to cradled rest. Though but two and a half years of age, the little one was one of the sweetest flowers in the garden of child life, the very joy of her parents, and her charming winsomeness endeared her to every heart and made her a favorite with all who knew her. The funeral on Sunday afternoon was private, the services being conducted by Rev. V. P. Reeve, Rector of St. Matthews. Mr. and Mrs. Maybee have the sympathy of the whole community in their great loss.5
Burial* She and Betty Ryerson Maybee were buried at Brandon Municipal Cemetery, Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. Inscription "Betty Ryerson Maybee/Jan. 16, 1916 - Sept 28, 1916; Eleanor Ryerson Maybee/aged 2 1/2 years/April 24, 1910 - Oct 5, 1912."6,7

'A FORCE OF NATURE:' The exceptional life of Ottawa's Nevitt Maybee by Andrew Duffy
Nevitt Davidson Black was born in September 26, 1925 in Beijing, where her father was head of the anatomy department at Peking Union Medical College. There, from fossils found near Beijing, Davidson Black identified a new species of early human, Sinanthropus pekinensis, that came to be known as "Peking Man."
Black died suddenly from a heart attack in 1934 when Nevitt was just eight years old. Around that same time, she contracted tuberculosis and was confined to hospital for a year. She read one book a day to pass the time.
Nevitt remained in Beijing with her mother, Adena, until 1938 — one year after Japanese forces occupied the city in the Second Sino-Japanese War. It would not be the last time her life was buffeted by war.
Back in Canada, she studied at an all-girls boarding school before taking pre-med courses at the University of Toronto. She wanted to be a doctor like her father.
A tea party organized by her mother derailed her would-be medical career. There, she met John Maybee, a Canadian navy lieutenant with a doctorate from Princeton University. They married on Aug. 4, 1945 and moved to Ottawa, where Mabyee joined the foreign affairs department, now Global Affairs Canada.
He was posted to the Canadian mission in Nanjing, China in 1948 thanks, in part, to his wife's ability to speak Mandarin. The country was then in the final stages of its long civil war.
Communist forces entered Nanjing in April 1949 and Nevitt, pregnant with her second child, was forced to evacuate while her husband remained with the mission. It would be almost a year before they were reunited.
In 1964, the family moved to Beirut, Lebanon when Maybee was named ambassador. Three years later, in June 1967, Nevitt and four of her children boarded a rented plane with 250 Canadians to flee the Six-Day War that inflamed the Middle East.
Nevitt ran an ordered household. She kept a jobs chart and each child had a file card with a "room report" that tracked completed tasks such as made beds, emptied waste baskets and cleared desks. "She could put us in line with a look from her eye," says Maylanne Maybee.
Wherever she went, Nevitt was also an involved citizen and leader. In Australia, she was a roving commissioner for the Girl Guides. In Lebanon, she was involved with the local psychiatric hospital. In India, she supported Operation Eyesight Universal, a Canadian aid organization devoted to treating eye disease in developing countries.
In Ottawa, she was president of the Ottawa Council of Women. She was also deeply involved in the Anglican Church, and was among the first women ever elected to its national executive committee, where she sought an expanded role for women. At St. Thomas the Apostle Anglican Church in Alta Vista, she was the first woman to read the Sunday lesson, a role traditionally reserved for men. "And the roof did not fall in," she whispered after her reading.
The Anglican Church of Canada ordained its first women priests in November 1976, and Nevitt soon set her sights on joining their ranks. When her husband retired, Nevitt returned to school and completed a bachelor's degree at the University of Ottawa then a Master's degree in theology at St. Paul's University. She was ordained a deacon in 1985, and a priest two years later.
"I guess my initial thought on being ordained was of how unworthy I was," she told an interviewer. "But it isn't really a question of unworthiness — we're all unworthy."
In her 70s, she led guided church tours to China, India, Australia and Lebanon; she served as an honorary assistant at All Saints' Westboro for 33 years.
She was an encouraging and very genuine soul," said Ottawa West Archdeacon Christopher Dunn. "She would tell you when she disagreed with you about something because that's the way she was. But she would do it with love."3
