A veteran of the Marine Corps, he was a staff sergeant serving in Korea from 1951 to 1953 as a member of the 1st Marine Airwing. He worked as Wellman's and General Electric, retiring in 1991. In addition to fossil hunting with his family, he enjoyed traveling, watching, coaching and cheering on girls' fastpitch softball games and was an honorary assistant coach for the Shelbyville High School varsity team. He continued to coach as his health allowed and cheered on the girls through this past season. The highlight of his summer was attending the World Fastpitch Girls' Softball Tournament in Columbus. He is survived by his former wife, Jean Porter; four children, John Schreiner, Susannah Bush, Jacqui Culver and Shawn Garvey; six siblings, Marie Herbert, Lucille Youngman, Frank Schreiner, Don Schreiner, Betty Sandhage and Joan Tebbe; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by one son, Kevin Schreiner; his parents; and two brothers, Bud Schreiner and Jim Schreiner. A celebration of life service was scheduled for 11 a.m. today at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1201 North Riley Highway, Shelbyville. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery in Greensburg.1 |
