oObit*13 January 2006  On 13 January 2006 at Madison, Wisconsin, the obituary of Gladys Nadene Costain read: BARABOO - Gladys Connie Flygt, age 79, passed into the Lord's hands, in Baraboo, on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006. She was born Gladys Nadine Costain on a table in the family's farmhouse outside of Parker, S.D., on Feb. 11, 1926. Her parents were Susan (Mabee) and Raymond Costain. She graduated from Parker High School in 1943, and then attended Yankton College and the Abbott Hospital School of Nursing, Minneapolis, Minn., receiving her nursing degree (R.N.) in 1947. Known to most friends as "Connie", she later legally changed her name. She met the love of her life, her husband Dr. Helmer Harding "Bud" Flygt, while singing at a wedding in Park Falls. They were married on Oct. 11, 1947, in Parker, S.D. After living for a short time in Chippewa Falls, they moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where she was a nurse. Connie and Bud moved from Phoenix to Park Falls in 1958, into the house they designed and built themselves. She was a housewife and devoted mother of two children, active in Park Falls life through the First Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) Choir, the Apollo Club, bridge club, Cub Scouts and numerous civic organizations. In 1965, she and Bud purchased the Flygt's Rexall Drugstore, Park Falls, and she managed the store until it was destroyed by fire in 1968. She was appointed as chairman of the Park Falls Housing Authority when it was established in 1968, and served in that position for 20 years. As chair, she oversaw the building and running of the Flambeau Heights elderly housing project and scattered site low-income housing in Park Falls. She overcame a lawsuit which sought to prevent the building of the housing, worked closely with the builders, and then oversaw the day-to-day operations for many years. She was active in the Wisconsin Association of Housing Authorities, including service as a district director and association secretary. In 1972, she ran for the Wisconsin State Assembly, winning the Republican primary, but losing in the general election. When her mother died in 1970, Connie began active oversight of the family farm near Parker, S.D. The farm has been in the hands of her family continuously since 1872. Knowledgeable and experienced in farming, she later also managed other farmland owned by her family in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. One of her proudest experiences was placing the bulk of the Montana property into the Conservation Reserve Program, choosing a blend of native grasses which has provided a consistent stand of forage for waterfowl, small animals and antelope for many years notwithstanding persistent drought and supervising the custom farming and spraying needed to keep the land in tip-top shape. After selling her house in Park Falls in 1989, she moved to the family cottage on the Flambeau River near Park Falls. She loved the trees and serenity of the forest, and felt closer to both God and Bud, who passed away in 1977. But she also enjoyed getting in the car and going, whether to one of the farms, to see her children, or just to travel. She is survived by her two sons, Dr. Thomas Rex (Charlene) Flygt of Baraboo, and Douglas Lee (Flora) Flygt of Madison; four grandchildren, Adrian Flygt of Longmont, Colo., Reed Flygt of Baraboo, Gregory Flygt of Madison, and LeeAnne Flygt of Madison; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, including her special niece, Barbara Wulf. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bud; and her sister, Shirley Wulf. Funeral Services will be held at the First Congregational Church, Park Falls, on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Scott O'Connor officiating., Burial will take place in Forest Home Cemetery, Fifield.
