Death*12 February 1918 Eliza Caroline Merritt died on 12 February 1918 at Towner's, Putnam County, New York, at age 80.2,7
oObit23 February 1918  On 23 February 1918 at Carmel, Putnam County, New York, the obituary of Eliza Caroline Merritt read: Mrs. Eliza Caroline Cowl, a well known resident of Towner's, died on Tuesday, February 12, 1918, at the resident of her son-in-law, John S. Wood, at that place. She had been in poor health for over a year past, and went to the Danbury Hospital last year for treatment, which afforded only a temporary relief. Previously to that time she was a remarkably well preserved woman for her years, active and able to engage in household duties.
She was born in Patterson eighty-two years ago. Her parents were William J. and Esther (Mabie) Merritt. She married Washington Cowl, who served in the Civil War and died years ago. Two daughters, Mrs. Wood, at whose home she died, and Mrs. P. O'Hara, of Brewster, survive her. She also leaves several grandchildren and three brothers, Sanford Merritt, of Patterson, and John and Henry Merritt, of New York City.
Mrs. Cowl possessed a kind and sympathetic nature and whenever sickness or trouble invaded the homes of relatives and friends, her comforting presence was ever manifest and her helpful services tendered. She was a good mother and an obliging neighbor and very loyal in her friendships. She will be much missed by her children and other relatives and also by a circle of neighbors and friends. During the lifetime of her aunt, the late Mrs. Eliza A. Hopkins, she was a frequent visitor in Carmel, and had quite a number of friends and acquaintances in this village.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist Church, Towner's, on Friday last at 1 p.m. Burial in the Four Corners Cemetery beside her husband.2
Burial* She was buried at Patterson Baptist Cemetery, Patterson, Putnam County, New York. Inscription "Eliza C Merritt; wife of George W. Cowl; Died Feb 12 1918; Aged 80 Yrs 8 Mo & ???"5
