One of, if not indeed the oldest of our residents, who has lived In our midst for more than a quarter of a century unostentatiously in the quiet of his home, surrounded by bis family and a circle of warm and appreciative friends who were endeared to him by his many noble traits of character and christian virtues. Mr. Mabie was born in Tryon, now Montgomery county, this state, in l789, and located with his brother at Palatine church in the mercantile business, from there he removed to the town of Lenox, Madison county, where he followed the pursuit of farming. The early and prominent inhabitants who wore his townsmen and associates were Judge Bucher, Capt. Clark, the Burnetts, Urnees, and Mr. John Crouse of this city, and others, At the completion of the Erie canal Mr. Mabie located In the town of Manlius, from where he removed to this city and has since resided. In politics he was a Democrat of the Jeffersonian school, a kind father, a true and reliable friend, a good citizen, and an unassuming and sincere christian. He has passed to his reward in the full hope of a blessed immortality.17 |

oObit | 3 December 1888 | On 3 December 1888 at Chittenango, New York, the obituary of Catherine Bellinger read: The late Mrs. David Mabie was one of the earliest settlers in this part of the town. She was born at Palatine, Montgomery County, N. Y., December 31. 1795. Her maiden name was Catharine Bellinger. In the year 1803 she moved with her parents to Chittenango, Madison Co. She was married in 1816 to David Mabie, and moved with her husband in 1823 on a farm near Kirkville where she lived for 65 years, until her death. Her husband died in 1856. She had seven children. The oldest son, Simeon B. Mabie, died in 1875. The other sons and daughters who survive her are Mrs. Thomas Freeborn, Mrs. Irena Warner, Mrs. N. E. Wilcox, Mrs. C. M. Cole, Oliver Mabie, and William Mabie. How brief a summary, and yet how much was comprehended in a life-time such as hers! With a mind clear to the last, she could recall many important events that had occurred during the ninety-three years of her life; not only such events as were connected with the little region in which so many of her years were passed, but things of greater import that have marked the world's progress during the past century. She bad a vivid perception of the changes that had occurred in the vicinity of her home. Often have her grand-children listened with eager enchantment to her tales of those first year in the wilderness sixty-five years ago, of the little log house in the clearing, of the wolves that would howl about the window at night until frightened away by a brand from the fire, and of many experiences that strangely contrast the past with the present. But grand-mother's stories will never again be told by her. One by one the pioneers of our country have gone away, and soon none will be left who remember the years "when the country was new." Her old age was passed in quiet ease and comfort, and blessed with the love and honor of her children and grandchildren. Of late she manifested a restlessness and longing that showed that she was only waiting. The departure had no terrors for her. The pleasures and cares of many years ended and forgotten now. We are glad that she has gone to her reward.14 |
Burial* | She was buried at Kirkville Cemetery, Kirkville, Onondaga County, New York.15 |
