(Witness) oObit23 April 1914 John Henry Maybee was mentioned in the obituary of May Gilmour on 23 April 1914 at Canton, New York; May Gilmour Safford, wife of Mervin Safford, died at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs David Gilmour, Thursday morning, April 16, after an illness covering many months.
Mrs. Safford was born May 8, 1892, and had always lived here. She was actively connected with the -work in the Presbyterian church, a member of the choir and Bible class, until incapacitated by illness. She was- also a member of the Eastern Star chapter.
She is survived by her husband, her parents and three brothers, William of Rochester, John and Furloo of this place. The funeral services were held from her late home, 'Sunday afternoon at 1. The Eastern Star attending in a body. Rev. George F. Walker, of the Presbyterian church, officiating.
Interment was made in the Union cemetery.

Anecdote9 July 1935 9 July 1935. The Fourth of July last week was a memorable day for Mr. and Mrs. John H. Maybee. for to them it was not only the anniversary of the Magna Charter of this country, but also their Golden Wedding day. It was in Edwards, where last week Thursday several thousand people were holding forth in a mighty old-fashioned Fourth frolic, that Clara Wood was married to John Maybee fifty years ago. She was the daughter of Silas and Laura Wood, he the son of Nelson and Eliza Poole Maybee. And last week John and Clara looked back with fond memories to those Edwards and other days, he at the age of 75 years, and she at 74.
Mr. and Mrs. Maybee resided in Edwards all the years of their early life. It was in 1910 that they came to Canton to live. Mr. Maybee purchased the Hodskin House, now the Hotel Harrington, in 1911. This he later sold. A quiet man. he nevertheless has a great liking for forging ahead. It was he who built the garage now owned by Percy Dawley.
Shortly after the death of the late Wilfred Woodhead. he purchased the lumber and coal business of Robinson & Woodhead, which he has since conducted in partnership with his son. Nelson.
During the day of July Fourth Mr. and Mrs. Maybee attended a picnic held in their honor at the Russell picnic grounds. Many relatives, including their four children and several grandchildren were present.
During the day many friends and neighbors called to offer congratulations. Gifts of money, a nice floor lamp, and baskets of beautiful flowers were received by the couple.
Among the guests attending the picnic were: Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Maybee and family. Mrs. Ralph Gardiner and daughter. Shirley, of Bergen, Mrs. Mildred McKenney, Miss Jean McKenney, Richard McKenney. Anecdote* John Henry Maybee was raised in Edwards, N.Y. and nearby Hermon. As a boy, young John lived the life of a rural country lad, working and playing around the farm and swim ming in the nearby Oswegatchie River. One of the highlights of the young boy's life was leading his blind uncle and namesake, John Henry Maybee, around the local sawmill. When he was a little older, John spent a few summers helping his grandfather, Barnard Maybee, with the haying on his farm in the Perch Lake area of Jefferson County, near Evans Mills, N.Y.
John spent much of his time in the woods and soon learned to make his way in a logging camp. He married Clara Belle Wood on July 4, 1885 and they made their living logging in the local area. On July 17, 1897 they bought the Rushton House, a hotel in Edwards. They operated this hotel until 1904, when John had an opportunity to log a vast tract of land up in Canada. Because he needed capital to get started, he looked for a partner and finally found a lawyer in Watertown named Clute who agreed to invest $10,000 for a share in the venture. The tract of land was in Quebec, just across the Ottawa River from Mattawa, Ontario. John got together a crew to work in the woods, logging, trimming trees and skidding them out of the woods. The logs had to be hauled one mile up a mountain and then floated down a flume which had to be built to get the logs down the other side of the mountain to the Ottawa River. The logs were then floated down the river to the sawmill, according to the sales agreement.
This project was completed by 1909 and then John and Clara bought a piece of land in Russell, N.Y. In 1910 they sold this property and moved to Canton, N.Y. so their daughter, Mildred, could attend St. Lawrence University. In 1911 they bought the Hodskin House, a hotel on the banks of the DeGrasse River in the village of Canton. After a few years John sold this hotel and went into semi-retirement. (During all of these years Clara Belle worked side by side with John, working in the kitchen bearing a major share of the more difficult work. The young girls helped in the hotels doing chambermaid work, working in the diningroom and even helping at the front desk. Young Nelson helped in the kitchen when he wasn't in school and showed guests to their rooms when they had the hotel in Canton.) Thereafter, John bought and sold farm property, owning as many as six farms at one time during his later years. He was also the principal backer in a coal and lumber business run by his son, Nelson, in Canton, N.Y. for about 30 years.
It is interesting to note that, although not told in the family, in 1917 John Maybee won a lawsuit against a William A. Sullivan in which he was "allowed $7,061.25 on action to recover on note. This action is brought to recover on a promissory note for $5,000 given in 1907 as part of the purchase price of a quarter interest on about 100 square miles of timber land near Arnprior, Canada." Author's note: although the reference is Arnprior, Ontario, the land actually was on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River; not far from Mattawa, Ontario.

oObit*26 March 1942  On 26 March 1942 the obituary of John Henry Maybee read: Canton- John Henry Maybee, 82, retired Adirondack lumberman and former Canton hotel proprietor, died at his home at 45 Gouverneur street, this village, at 8:39 a.m. today after an illness of several months.
Until he retired from active business some years ago, Mr. Maybee was a well known St.Lawrence county lumber operator. For several years he owned the Hodskin House, now known as the Hotel Harrington. He was the owner of the Maybee Cost company which has been managed by his son, Nelson A. Maybee.
Mr. Maybee was born in the town of Hermon on Sept. 30, 1859, a son of Nelson and Eliza Poole Maybee. He spent his early life in Edwards and Fine where he was engaged in the lumber business.
He married Miss Clara Wood, daughter of Silas and Laura Austin Wood of Edwards, in 1885. They would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary next July. He has been a member of St. Lawrence lodge, No. 111, F. A. M., for many years and was also a member of the Edwards Odd Fellows lodge.
He became propietor of the Hodskin House here in 1911 and operated the hotel for several years before selling it to Thomas H. Burke. During that period he also owned the Miner Inn, formerly located on the site now occupied by Atwood's filling station.
He built the Harrington garage in 1912. In September of 1927, he purchased the Robinson and Woodhead. Coal and Lumber business.
Mr. Maybee is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. John (Laura) Gilmore of Dekalb Junction, Mrs. Ralph (Beatrice) Gardner of Alexander, and Mrs. Mildred McKeaney, Canton; a son, Nelson A. Maybee of Canton; two brothers, Burton and Webster Maybee of Russell; a sister Mrs. Charles Harris of Oswegatchie; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the home at 45 Gouverneur street Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Hugh S. Tigner, pastor of the Canton Universalist church, officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery

(Witness) Anecdote9 July 1935 The Fourth of July last week was a memorable day for Mr. and Mrs. John H. Maybee. for to them it was not only the anniversary of the Magna Charter of this country, but also their Golden Wedding day. It was in Edwards, where last week Thursday several thousand people were holding forth in a mighty old-fashioned Fourth frolic, that Clara Wood was married to John Maybee fifty years ago. She was the daughter of Silas and Laura Wood, he the son of Nelson and Eliza Poole Maybee. And last week John and Clara looked back with fond memories to those Edwards and other days, he at the age of 75 years, and she at 74.
Mr. and Mrs. Maybee resided in Edwards all the years of their early life. It was in 1910 that they came to Canton to live. Mr. Maybee purchased the Hodskin House, now the Hotel Harrington, in 1911. This he later sold. A quiet man. he nevertheless has a great liking for forging ahead. It was he who built the garage now owned by Percy Dawley.
Shortly after the death of the late Wilfred Woodhead. he purchased the lumber and coal business of Robinson & Woodhead, which he has since conducted in partnership with his son. Nelson.
During the day of July Fourth Mr. and Mrs. Maybee attended a picnic held in their honor at the Russell picnic grounds. Many relatives, including their four children and several grandchildren were present.
During the day many friends and neighbors called to offer congratulations. Gifts of money, a nice floor lamp, and baskets of beautiful flowers were received by the couple.

(Witness) Anecdote9 July 1935 The Fourth of July last week was a memorable day for Mr. and Mrs. John H. Maybee. for to them it was not only the anniversary of the Magna Charter of this country, but also their Golden Wedding day. It was in Edwards, where last week Thursday several thousand people were holding forth in a mighty old-fashioned Fourth frolic, that Clara Wood was married to John Maybee fifty years ago. She was the daughter of Silas and Laura Wood, he the son of Nelson and Eliza Poole Maybee. And last week John and Clara looked back with fond memories to those Edwards and other days, he at the age of 75 years, and she at 74.
Mr. and Mrs. Maybee resided in Edwards all the years of their early life. It was in 1910 that they came to Canton to live. Mr. Maybee purchased the Hodskin House, now the Hotel Harrington, in 1911. This he later sold. A quiet man. he nevertheless has a great liking for forging ahead. It was he who built the garage now owned by Percy Dawley.
Shortly after the death of the late Wilfred Woodhead. he purchased the lumber and coal business of Robinson & Woodhead, which he has since conducted in partnership with his son. Nelson.
During the day of July Fourth Mr. and Mrs. Maybee attended a picnic held in their honor at the Russell picnic grounds. Many relatives, including their four children and several grandchildren were present.
During the day many friends and neighbors called to offer congratulations. Gifts of money, a nice floor lamp, and baskets of beautiful flowers were received by the couple.
Among the guests attending the picnic were: Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Maybee and family. Mrs. Ralph Gardiner and daughter. Shirley, of Bergen, Mrs. Mildred McKenney, Miss Jean McKenney, Richard McKenney. (Witness) oObit26 March 1942 Burton Maybee was mentioned in the obituary of John Henry Maybee on 26 March 1942; Canton- John Henry Maybee, 82, retired Adirondack lumberman and former Canton hotel proprietor, died at his home at 45 Gouverneur street, this village, at 8:39 a.m. today after an illness of several months.
Until he retired from active business some years ago, Mr. Maybee was a well known St.Lawrence county lumber operator. For several years he owned the Hodskin House, now known as the Hotel Harrington. He was the owner of the Maybee Cost company which has been managed by his son, Nelson A. Maybee.
Mr. Maybee was born in the town of Hermon on Sept. 30, 1859, a son of Nelson and Eliza Poole Maybee. He spent his early life in Edwards and Fine where he was engaged in the lumber business.
He married Miss Clara Wood, daughter of Silas and Laura Austin Wood of Edwards, in 1885. They would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary next July. He has been a member of St. Lawrence lodge, No. 111, F. A. M., for many years and was also a member of the Edwards Odd Fellows lodge.
He became propietor of the Hodskin House here in 1911 and operated the hotel for several years before selling it to Thomas H. Burke. During that period he also owned the Miner Inn, formerly located on the site now occupied by Atwood's filling station.
He built the Harrington garage in 1912. In September of 1927, he purchased the Robinson and Woodhead. Coal and Lumber business.
Mr. Maybee is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. John (Laura) Gilmore of Dekalb Junction, Mrs. Ralph (Beatrice) Gardner of Alexander, and Mrs. Mildred McKeaney, Canton; a son, Nelson A. Maybee of Canton; two brothers, Burton and Webster Maybee of Russell; a sister Mrs. Charles Harris of Oswegatchie; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the home at 45 Gouverneur street Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Hugh S. Tigner, pastor of the Canton Universalist church, officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery

(Witness) oObit20 July 1943 Burton Maybee was mentioned in the obituary of Webster Maybee on 20 July 1943 at Canton, New York; Webster Maybee died Friday at the home of his brother Burton Maybee He had been working at his trade [carpentry] daily It was his custom to arise early and when he did not do so his niece investigated and found him dead in bed.
He was born in South Edwards April 19, 1876 the son of Eliza Poole and Nelson Maybee.
On May 4, 1898 he was married to Miss Lena Ward of Edwards. A son Lester, who was killed in a coasting accident in 1935.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Roy (Myrtle) Mason of Canton and Mrs. Evelyn Radigan of Gouverneur, one sister. Mrs. Clara Harris, Fine; one brother Burton Maybee, Russell; nine grandchildren two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday from the home of his brother, Burton Maybee with Rev. Myron E. Van Ornum, pastor of the Russell Methodist church officiating. Burial was at Antwerp.13

Until he retired from active business some years ago, Mr. Maybee was a well known St.Lawrence county lumber operator. For several years he owned the Hodskin House, now known as the Hotel Harrington. He was the owner of the Maybee Cost company which has been managed by his son, Nelson A. Maybee.
Mr. Maybee was born in the town of Hermon on Sept. 30, 1859, a son of Nelson and Eliza Poole Maybee. He spent his early life in Edwards and Fine where he was engaged in the lumber business.
He married Miss Clara Wood, daughter of Silas and Laura Austin Wood of Edwards, in 1885. They would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary next July. He has been a member of St. Lawrence lodge, No. 111, F. A. M., for many years and was also a member of the Edwards Odd Fellows lodge.
He became propietor of the Hodskin House here in 1911 and operated the hotel for several years before selling it to Thomas H. Burke. During that period he also owned the Miner Inn, formerly located on the site now occupied by Atwood's filling station.
He built the Harrington garage in 1912. In September of 1927, he purchased the Robinson and Woodhead. Coal and Lumber business.
Mr. Maybee is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. John (Laura) Gilmore of Dekalb Junction, Mrs. Ralph (Beatrice) Gardner of Alexander, and Mrs. Mildred McKeaney, Canton; a son, Nelson A. Maybee of Canton; two brothers, Burton and Webster Maybee of Russell; a sister Mrs. Charles Harris of Oswegatchie; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the home at 45 Gouverneur street Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Hugh S. Tigner, pastor of the Canton Universalist church, officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery

He was born in South Edwards April 19, 1876 the son of Eliza Poole and Nelson Maybee.
On May 4, 1898 he was married to Miss Lena Ward of Edwards. A son Lester, who was killed in a coasting accident in 1935.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Roy (Myrtle) Mason of Canton and Mrs. Evelyn Radigan of Gouverneur, one sister. Mrs. Clara Harris, Fine; one brother Burton Maybee, Russell; nine grandchildren two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Sunday from the home of his brother, Burton Maybee with Rev. Myron E. Van Ornum, pastor of the Russell Methodist church officiating. Burial was at Antwerp.13

(Witness) Anecdote9 July 1935 The Fourth of July last week was a memorable day for Mr. and Mrs. John H. Maybee. for to them it was not only the anniversary of the Magna Charter of this country, but also their Golden Wedding day. It was in Edwards, where last week Thursday several thousand people were holding forth in a mighty old-fashioned Fourth frolic, that Clara Wood was married to John Maybee fifty years ago. She was the daughter of Silas and Laura Wood, he the son of Nelson and Eliza Poole Maybee. And last week John and Clara looked back with fond memories to those Edwards and other days, he at the age of 75 years, and she at 74.
Mr. and Mrs. Maybee resided in Edwards all the years of their early life. It was in 1910 that they came to Canton to live. Mr. Maybee purchased the Hodskin House, now the Hotel Harrington, in 1911. This he later sold. A quiet man. he nevertheless has a great liking for forging ahead. It was he who built the garage now owned by Percy Dawley.
Shortly after the death of the late Wilfred Woodhead. he purchased the lumber and coal business of Robinson & Woodhead, which he has since conducted in partnership with his son. Nelson.
During the day of July Fourth Mr. and Mrs. Maybee attended a picnic held in their honor at the Russell picnic grounds. Many relatives, including their four children and several grandchildren were present.
During the day many friends and neighbors called to offer congratulations. Gifts of money, a nice floor lamp, and baskets of beautiful flowers were received by the couple.
Among the guests attending the picnic were: Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Maybee and family. Mrs. Ralph Gardiner and daughter. Shirley, of Bergen, Mrs. Mildred McKenney, Miss Jean McKenney, Richard McKenney. oObit*21 September 1944  On 21 September 1944 the obituary of Clara May Maybee read: Oswegatchie- Mrs. Clara Maybee Harris, wife of Charles Harris, died on her 63rd birthday Wednesday evening at the farm home near Fine. Death, which occurred during her sleep, was attributed to a heart attack.
She had not been well for a number of months, but last Sunday attended the funeral of her brother, Burton Maybee, held at Russell. It is thought that this exertion may have hastened her death.
Mrs. Harris was born in Fine, Sept. 20, 1881, youngest daughter of the late Nelson and Eliza Pool Maybee. She was educated in the Fine schools and in 1900, was married to Mr. Harris, a native of Pitcairn.
The couple lived at Fowler, operating a farm, until 1904, when they purchased the O.A. Kerr farm on the Ridge road, one mile from Fine, and since had resided there.
She was a member of the Methodist church and its Sunday school, secretary of the church W.S.C.S. fro many years, ember of Mountain View grange and secretary-treasurer of the organization for a long period.
Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, Roscoe Harris, Spragueville, and Bert Harris, Pearl River, and five grandchildren.11

Maybee of Flint, age 79, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 8, 2010 at Genesys Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2010 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road and 9 a.m. Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home, Reverend Michael Lusk officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery with a military graveside service under the auspices of VFW Post #822 Honor Guard. Visitation 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Delbert was born in Flint, Michigan on November 20, 1930, the son of the late Merton Maybee, mother Hazel and step-mother, Marie. Delbert graduated from Flint Central High School and attended GMI. He served in the U.S. Navy. Delbert married Florence K. Roberts on August 1, 1953 in Flint. Mr. Maybee retired from General Motors, AC Spark Plug Division in 1980, after 30 years of service. He was an Associate Member of the F.O.P. Lodge #126 for 25 years. Delbert was an avid outdoorsman, who loved hunting and fishing. Most of all he loved spending time at 8 Point Lake with family and friends. Surviving are loving wife of 57 years, Kay; seven children, Dallas (Linda) of Davison, Debbie (Doug) Delduca of Grand Blanc, Dennis of Burton, Diane (James) Ignace of Flint, Douglas (Louise) of Grand Blanc, Denise Blake of Davison and Dawn Richardson of Burton; 13 grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer, Jimi, Douglas, Daniel, Felicia, Shain, Tasha, Ian, Amber, Michael, Nicholas and Holly; 12 great-grandchildren; twin brother, Gilbert (Janice) Maybee of Ft. Myers; brother, Jack (Donna) Maybee of Cleveland; two brothers-in-law, Jack (Wanda) Roberts of Pennsylvania and Gary Roberts of Flint; sister-in-law, Sandy (Vernon) Like of Burton; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Lee Maybee; brother, Ronald Maybee of Georgia and nephew, Michael Maybee.5 
Burial He was buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Blanc, Genesee County, Michigan.6

(Witness) Anecdote9 July 1935 The Fourth of July last week was a memorable day for Mr. and Mrs. John H. Maybee. for to them it was not only the anniversary of the Magna Charter of this country, but also their Golden Wedding day. It was in Edwards, where last week Thursday several thousand people were holding forth in a mighty old-fashioned Fourth frolic, that Clara Wood was married to John Maybee fifty years ago. She was the daughter of Silas and Laura Wood, he the son of Nelson and Eliza Poole Maybee. And last week John and Clara looked back with fond memories to those Edwards and other days, he at the age of 75 years, and she at 74.
Mr. and Mrs. Maybee resided in Edwards all the years of their early life. It was in 1910 that they came to Canton to live. Mr. Maybee purchased the Hodskin House, now the Hotel Harrington, in 1911. This he later sold. A quiet man. he nevertheless has a great liking for forging ahead. It was he who built the garage now owned by Percy Dawley.
Shortly after the death of the late Wilfred Woodhead. he purchased the lumber and coal business of Robinson & Woodhead, which he has since conducted in partnership with his son. Nelson.
During the day of July Fourth Mr. and Mrs. Maybee attended a picnic held in their honor at the Russell picnic grounds. Many relatives, including their four children and several grandchildren were present.
During the day many friends and neighbors called to offer congratulations. Gifts of money, a nice floor lamp, and baskets of beautiful flowers were received by the couple.
